Medieval Minecraft Fabric MMC3: First Look and Getting Started Guide

Medieval Minecraft Fabric MMC3: First Look and Getting Started Guide

11 min read

Medieval Minecraft Fabric MMC3 is the latest installment in the popular Medieval Minecraft (MMC) series by Luna Pixels Studios. This modpack continues the tradition of bringing a rich, RPG-like experience to Minecraft, this time built on the Fabric platform for Minecraft 1.21.

You can get this modpack on curseforge.

The MMC series has a strong reputation for blending medieval themes with deep gameplay mechanics, and I've had the pleasure of covering previous versions in the past. In fact, in one of my earlier videos [link to previous video], I experimented with modifying the game using command blocks to change my origin every time I woke up.

While that was a fun experiment, for this review of MMC3, we'll be sticking to a single origin (Human) to give you a more straightforward look at the core experience. This approach will allow us to focus on the myriad of new features and enhancements that MMC3 brings to the table.

With over 200 mods, MMC3 offers a fresh take on the Minecraft world, filled with new structures, bosses, and content to discover. It focuses heavily on exploration, adventure, and progression, making it a great addition to the series, for both newcomers to the series and veteran players alike.

Important Note

As of August 2024, Medieval Minecraft Fabric MMC3 is in early development. You should be aware that future updates may bring significant changes, potentially breaking existing worlds. Keep this in mind when starting your adventure. This is living on the edge with mod packs!

Key Features

MMC3 is packed with features that transform the Minecraft experience. Exploration and adventure take center stage, with numerous mods adding new structures, dungeons, and bosses to discover. The pack embraces RPG elements, from choosing your race at the start to leveling up various skills as you play.

Built on Minecraft 1.21, the pack enhances vanilla content, including improvements to features like the Trials Chambers. Performance is a priority, with the pack being fully optimized and offering shader support for smooth gameplay.

Survival gets more challenging and interesting with new mechanics for heat, cold, and dehydration. For those craving new realms to explore, the pack includes additional dimensions, such as a bee-themed realm. As you venture further from spawn, you'll face progressively tougher challenges thanks to the RPG difficulty scaling.

Getting Started

World Creation and Origins

Your adventure begins in a village, reminiscent of games like Skyrim. This immediate immersion into civilization sets the tone for your journey. Before you set off, you'll need to choose your origin. The Origins mod offers a variety of races, each with unique abilities and challenges. For solo play, Human is a solid choice, but the diversity of options makes for interesting multiplayer scenarios.

Quest Book

One of your first tasks should be to open the quest book. This invaluable resource guides you through the pack's more complex mods and presents a clear progression path. While still in development, the quest book already offers crucial information on survival mechanics, helping you manage thirst, heat, and cold. It also outlines boss progression, giving you some clear goals to work towards, and introduces you to various mods as you advance. Make it a habit to check the quest book regularly – it's your main guide through this rich, complex world -- and you'll get some important loot in the process.

Early Game Goals

As you start your journey, focus on gathering basic resources and setting up shelter, much like in vanilla Minecraft.

For storage, craft a Traveler's Backpack for portable inventory expansion, and set up Tom's Simple Storage system in your base.

Exploration is key in MMC3. Use JourneyMap to navigate and mark points of interest. Keep an eye out for new structures and dungeons added by various mods. The End Remastered mod changes how you access the End dimension, so start searching for the unique eyes needed for this.

Progress your character by leveling up skills using the Pufferfish Skills system. Focus on skills that complement your playstyle, whether that's melee, archery, stealth and mobility, or healing.

For resource processing, set up an Alloy Forgery to increase ore production.

Combat is a major aspect of MMC3. Start by crafting early-game weapons and armor from Mythic Metals, and begin preparing for epic boss encounters from mods like Bosses of Mass Destruction and AdventureZ. Different bosses will require different strategies. I'm not great at PVP, so I tend to tank bosses. However, that's not always possible, and a ranged approach is necessary for some bosses. You'll do well to progress in both areas.

Don't forget about survival management. Learn to handle thirst and temperature, which are uniquely non-vanilla. Always carry water and appropriate clothing for different biomes.

Key Systems to Understand

The Pufferfish Skills and Attributes mods form the core of character progression. Spend time understanding how to level these up effectively. As you defeat mobs, you'll get points to spend on these skills. At first you'll choose one of 4 paths, healing, combat, archery, and movement

Unlike vanilla Minecraft, you'll need to manage thirst and temperature. The Dehydration mod adds thirst mechanics, while Scorchful and Frostiful introduce heat and cold-based survival challenges and combat enhancements.

Keep an eye out for enhanced Trials Chambers. There's a mod that bring these challenging dungeons' entrances to the surface, making them easier to find and access.

Combat gets a revamp with Marium's Soulslike Weaponry, adding new mechanics and powerful weapons to master.

The RPG Difficulty mod increases mob difficulty based on your distance from spawn, adding a new layer of challenge to exploration.

For gear progression, the Armor of the Ages mod adds new tiers of armor to work towards.

To make long-distance travel more manageable, use Fabric Waystones to set up a network of teleportation points.

For inventory management, the pack includes Inventory HUD+. If you find your inventory displayed in the middle of your screen, press the "I" key to toggle it off.
