Minecraft Error Process crashed with exit code -1073741819
Encountering errors like "Process crashed with exit code -1073741819" in Minecraft can be frustrating, especially given how cryptic and unhelpful these codes can seem. Generally, error codes like 0 or -1 or even longer numbers aren't very informative. However, some codes, such as this one, -1073741819, do carry specific meanings that can help troubleshoot the issue.
Additionally, these errors and their causes can evolve over time. Something that caused this error several years ago may have been resolved, and a new cause can surface. Therefore, something that helped back then may not help now.
There does seem to be a consistent correlation between this error and NVidia GPUs. Updating your NVidia drivers, especially when experiencing errors and game crashes is always a good idea. More info on that below.
Personally, I'm getting this error as of the date of this post (July 2024), apparently related to some interaction between Minecraft 1.21, Nvidia drivers, and OBS. Additionally, I use Iris and Sodium mods as well as Distant Horizons. They're all graphics heavy mods, which seem to be active in the logs while this error happens. Though it does happen even while sitting on the menu screen.
Here’s what I’ve found and some steps that might help.
OBS Conflicts
If you use OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) while playing Minecraft with an NVidia GPU, this error might occur shortly after starting Minecraft in Windowed mode. Here are a few things to try to mitigate this issue:
- Use Full Screen mode: If possible, start Minecraft in full screen mode. This is not always practical, especially when using multiple monitors, and doing recordings with OBS.
- Start Minecraft First: Launch Minecraft before starting OBS.
- Toggle Fullscreen Mode: If you need to run Minecraft in Windowed mode, start the game in Fullscreen or quickly change to Fullscreen mode (hit F11), wait for a minute, then switch back to Windowed mode.
The third method is what I use and I've had success with that.
NVidia Drivers
Historically, exit code -1073741819 has been associated with Nvidia GPUs. This error often points to a problem with the graphics drivers. While it didn't help for me, many users have reported that updating their Nvidia drivers can resolve the issue. Here’s how you can update your drivers:
Using Device Manager:
- Press
Windows + R
, typedevmgmt.msc
, and hit Enter. - Find your Nvidia graphics card under "Display adapters," right-click it, and select "Update driver."
- Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software" and follow the prompts.
Using Nvidia GeForce Experience:
- Open the GeForce Experience app.
- Go to the "Drivers" tab.
- Click "Check for updates" and install the latest drivers available.
Updating your graphics drivers is a good first step in addressing this issue. However, if this doesn’t resolve the problem, there are other potential fixes to try.
